Benzodiazepines Reference Materials

Benzodiazepines, colloquially referred to as “benzos”, are central nervous system depressants otherwise referred to as sedatives. They are commonly prescribed to treat conditions such as anxiety disorders, seizures, insomnia and alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Common examples of prescribed benzodiazepine medications include alprazolam, lorazepam, clonazepam, diazepam and temazepam.

These substances are often abused separately, or in combination with other benzodiazepines and other substances of abuse, such as opioids, which can be potentially life-threatening. Testing for these substances is therefore required during clinical and forensic casework to confirm cases of suspected misuse, and inform the correct course of action to follow.
