The intent of this sample is to test the ability of laboratories to detect and identify an unknown contaminant in surface/potable waters. This sample is designed for laboratories which may be involved in investigating potentially contaminated potable or surface waters and tests both the extraction and identification stages of investigations. Participants are provided with a two litre water sample and one or more ‘indicators’ of a potential problem, e.g. water is discoloured or has an oily sheen. Participants are asked to identify the contaminating substance(s). Results returned will be identified as satisfactory or unsatisfactory.
