Cannabis-Related Reference Materials

Cannabis-related compounds are of high interest in toxicology due their widespread use, as well as the presence of various derivatives - including phytocannabinoids, which naturally occur in the cannabis plant, and synthetic cannabinoids, which are manufactured to mimic the effect of natural cannabinoids.

Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient within cannabis plants, induces a euphoric effect and, consequently, is commonly abused and grown illicitly in regions where it is banned or restricted. Among the other main compounds of interest are: CBD (cannabidiol), a non-psychoactive component with potential therapeutic effects; CBN (cannabinol), a degradant of THC; THC-COOH, a metabolite of THC; and terpenes.

Understanding the presence and amount of these compounds in biological samples aids in assessing levels of cannabis exposure and impairment, determining potential health risks, and forensic investigations.

LGC Standards offers a wide range of research chemicals to further scientific understanding of cannabinoids, in addition to neat, single and multicomponent cannabis-related reference materials. Many of these are accredited to ISO 17034 to support toxicological casework.
